NEW YORK, N.Y., December 7 — As we go to press, mass protests continue across the country in response to grand jury decisions that have cleared the police officers responsible for the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City.
On Nov. 24, a St. Louis County grand jury returned a “no true bill” (a legal term for no charges) against Darren Wilson, the Ferguson cop who shot and killed Brown while he stood with his hands in the air. Nine days later, on Dec. 3, a Staten Island grand jury handed down its own “no true bill” in the case of NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo, who applied a chokehold on Garner, provoking a heart attack.
The following was distributed as a leaflet throughout May and June to mass meetings and protests of Detroit city workers by members and supporters of the Detroit Unit of the Workers Party in America.
Brothers and sisters! If you haven’t by now, you will soon receive the ballot sent to you by officials from the “emergency” dictatorship now running this city. This den of thieves and financial thugs will be asking you to vote to cut your own throat in exchange for empty promises and emptier wallets, courtesy of the bosses, bankers and political barbarians of the Republican and Democratic parties.
Rabid Ruling Classes Tell Bankrupt Detroit’s Working Poor to Drop Dead
As we go to press, escalating protests against the wave of mass water shutoffs have resulted in a 15-day moratorium on shutoffs, beginning on July 21. Rumors also abound that control of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department will be taken out of the hands of appointed dictator Kevyn Orr and transferred back to the city. DETROIT, July 7 — In the year since the city of Detroit was forced into bankruptcy by the exploiting and oppressing classes, and placed under the control of “Emergency Manager” dictator Kevyn Orr by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, poor and working people have been under relentless attack in the name of “fiscal responsibility.”
